Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, is a British ethologist and the author of In the Shadow of Man” as well as several other books such as Through a Window, Seeds of Hope, and My Life With the Chimpanzees. Born in England in 1934, Goodall grew up fascinated by animals. Her decision to travel to East Africa as a young woman brought her into contact with anthropologist Louis Leakey, who selected her to conduct primate research and helped her secure funding for her work in Gombe. Goodall’s years-long study on chimpanzee behavior made her one of the world’s most famous primatologists. An avid environmentalist, Goodall used her fame to champion nature and wildlife conservation as well as animal rights. She founded the Jane Goodall Institute in 1977 to advocate for the protection of wild apes and their habitats. Dr. Goodall was made a Dame of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth ll in 2003.
Louis Leakey was a British-Kenyan archaeologist and paleoanthropologist. Born in 1903, Leakey grew up in British-occupied Kenya and was especially interested in the local Kikuyu people, becoming fluent in their language and developing strong relationships with their community. After WW l, he moved to England, where he attended secondary school and studied at Cambridge University.
