Long Answer
1. Miles decides to go to Culver Creek because he is searching for more. He chooses that school partly because his father attended it, but more than that, he believes in “the Great Perhaps,” which François Rabelais spoke of. He has few friends and little involvement in his current school, and hopes to find more at Culver Creek. (Chapter 1)
2. The novel ends with Miles reflecting on Takumi’s letter and Alaska. He accepts forgiveness and is hopeful that Alaska is somewhere “beautiful” (Chapter 58), which builds a sad but hopeful tone.
